Israel Strikes Syrian Army Near Sweida, Escalating Role in Regional Conflict

DAMASCUS, SYRIA – Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes against Syrian government army positions in the southern province of Sweida late Tuesday, a significant escalation that risks igniting a wider conflict. The strikes came after Syrian troops were deployed to the area to quell deadly sectarian clashes, a move Israel described as a violation of security understandings in the sensitive border region.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation in a statement early Wednesday, asserting that the strikes targeted Syrian Arab Army (SAA) infrastructure, including command posts and armored vehicles. The IDF stated the deployment of Syrian forces into the region, which lies near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, constituted a "direct threat" that could be exploited by Iran and its proxies, notably Hezbollah.
