Minnesota Shooter Allegedly Confessed to Murders in Letter to FBI, Implicating Governor

WASHINGTON – A man accused of murdering a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband allegedly confessed to the killings in a letter sent to the director of the FBI, claiming he was ordered to carry out the attack by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, according to federal court documents unsealed Wednesday.

The suspect, Vance Boelter, is charged with the murders of State Rep. Jennifer "Jenna" Mindt and her husband, Charles Mindt, who were found shot to death in their home earlier this month. The letter, which prosecutors described as a confession, adds a shocking and bizarre dimension to a case that has already alarmed law enforcement and highlighted the growing threat of political violence.

In the handwritten letter addressed to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Boelter reportedly claimed he had been “approached” by Governor Walz and instructed to kill Minnesota’s two U.S. senators, Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, because “Tim wants to be senator.” The letter alleges the killing of Rep. Mindt was part of this broader, politically motivated conspiracy.

The Disturbing Allegations

Federal prosecutors introduced the letter as evidence in a recent court filing. According to the filing, Boelter wrote that he was meant to target the senators but went to Rep. Mindt’s home instead. The documents did not provide a clear explanation for this alleged change of plans.

Authorities have treated the claims against Governor Walz as unsubstantiated and outlandish. A spokesperson for the governor’s office immediately dismissed the allegations as the desperate and baseless ramblings of a violent criminal.

"These claims are absurd, false, and have no basis in reality," said Communications Director Grace Tennyson in a statement. "Governor Walz is focused on supporting the Mindt family and all Minnesotans grieving this horrific tragedy. It is deeply disturbing that the suspect would attempt to deflect from his heinous actions with such vile and preposterous lies."

The FBI has not commented publicly on the contents of the letter but has confirmed it is part of the ongoing investigation.

A Case of Stalking and Political Threats

The murders of Jenna and Charles Mindt on July 5 sent shockwaves through Minnesota’s political landscape. Investigators quickly identified Boelter as a suspect, revealing he had a history of stalking and making threats against Rep. Mindt and other officials.

Before the letter's existence was known, prosecutors had already alleged that Boelter was engaged in a wider plot against politicians. A search of his property reportedly uncovered a "kill list" that included the names of Rep. Mindt, Senators Klobuchar and Smith, and other public figures. This evidence suggested the attack was premeditated and part of a larger campaign of targeted violence.

Boelter was arrested two days after the killings following a statewide manhunt. He faces multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and stalking. His defense attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the newly revealed letter.

Heightened Concerns Over Political Safety

This case unfolds against a backdrop of increasing threats against elected officials across the United States. Lawmakers at local, state, and federal levels have reported a surge in harassment and credible threats of violence, prompting calls for enhanced security measures.

The strange claims in Boelter’s letter, while dismissed by officials, underscore the volatile and often delusional nature of such threats. Legal experts suggest that while the allegations against the governor are not considered credible, the letter itself serves as powerful evidence of the suspect’s motive and state of mind, likely strengthening the prosecution's case against him.

The investigation continues as federal and state authorities work to understand the full scope of Boelter's plans and whether he acted alone. For now, the tragic loss of a public servant and her husband is compounded by a disturbing narrative that points to the deep-seated dangers of modern political polarization.
