Scottie Scheffler Secures FedEx St. Jude Title with Final-Round Surge

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Scottie Scheffler captured the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship in a dramatic final-round performance on Sunday, carding a blistering 6-under 64 to overturn a significant deficit and claim the first leg of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs.
The world's top-ranked player finished the tournament at 15-under par, edging out a crestfallen Tommy Fleetwood by a single stroke at a challenging TPC Southwind. The victory not only earns Scheffler a winner's check of $3.6 million but also solidifies his position atop the FedExCup standings heading into the next stage of the postseason.
Fleetwood, who held a commanding four-shot lead entering the weekend and a two-shot advantage to start the final day, saw his title hopes evaporate on the back nine. A steady round turned sour with costly bogeys on the 14th and 16th holes, opening the door for Scheffler's relentless charge. The Englishman finished with a final-round 70, ending his week at 14-under.
The Decisive Back Nine
The tournament's outcome was decided in the final hour of play. While Fleetwood struggled to maintain his momentum, Scheffler was flawless. After turning in a solid 2-under, Scheffler ignited his round with an eagle on the par-5 16th, draining a 25-foot putt that sent a roar through the Memphis crowd. He followed with a steady par on the difficult 17th.
Playing one group ahead of Fleetwood, Scheffler sealed his victory with a clinical birdie on the 18th hole, placing his approach shot to within six feet. The subsequent putt moved him to 15-under, setting a daunting target for Fleetwood, who now needed a birdie to force a playoff.
Fleetwood’s final push fell short. His drive on 18 found the right rough, and his approach shot failed to reach the green, leaving him a difficult up-and-down. He was unable to convert, and a closing par confirmed Scheffler as the champion.
"I just tried to stay patient," Scheffler said in a post-round interview with CBS Sports. "Tommy was playing great golf all week. I knew I had to post a number and just put a little pressure on him. That eagle on 16 was huge, and I'm just fortunate to come out on top."
FedExCup Standings Reshuffled
The results from Memphis have significant implications for the FedExCup Playoffs. Only the top 50 players in the standings advance to next week's BMW Championship. Scheffler's win strengthens his grip on the No. 1 spot, giving him a crucial advantage in the staggered-start format of the Tour Championship.
Meanwhile, several players on the bubble made clutch performances to extend their seasons. Collin Morikawa, who finished tied for third at 12-under alongside Viktor Hovland, jumped from 57th to 40th in the standings to secure his spot at the BMW Championship. Conversely, players like Adam Scott, who missed the cut, saw their 2025 PGA Tour season come to an end.
Fleetwood, despite the sting of a second-place finish, moves to fourth in the FedExCup standings, in a prime position to make a run at the overall title in Atlanta.
"It's a tough one to swallow," Fleetwood conceded. "I felt in control for most of the day, but a couple of loose swings on the back nine cost me. Credit to Scottie, he played a fantastic round of golf. We'll regroup and get ready for next week."
The PGA Tour season now moves to Castle Rock, Colorado, for the BMW Championship, where the field will be cut to 30 for the season-ending Tour Championship.
