Collin Morikawa Claims 2025 FedEx Cup with Dramatic Final-Round Surge at East Lake

ATLANTA – Collin Morikawa is the 2025 FedEx Cup champion. In a dramatic final-round performance at East Lake Golf Club, Morikawa overcame a three-stroke deficit to capture the PGA Tour's ultimate prize and the accompanying $25 million bonus, capping a remarkable season with a clutch performance on Sunday.

The 28-year-old shot a brilliant 6-under-par 64 in the final round to finish the tournament at 23-under, edging out Viktor Hovland by two strokes. The victory marks Morikawa's first FedEx Cup title and serves as a powerful statement at the end of a long and demanding season.

A Back-Nine Duel for the Title

The final day evolved into a tense two-man race between Morikawa and Hovland, who entered Sunday's round with the lead and looked poised to defend his FedEx Cup crown. Through the front nine, Hovland maintained his advantage, playing steady, conservative golf.

However, the championship was decided on the back nine. Morikawa, known for his elite iron play, began to apply relentless pressure. He carded birdies on the 13th and 15th holes to close the gap before the decisive moment arrived at the par-4 17th.

After Hovland's tee shot found the deep Bermuda rough, leading to a costly bogey, Morikawa stood over a 15-foot birdie putt. He calmly drained it, producing a two-shot swing that gave him the lead for the first time all day. He sealed the victory with a composed par on the final hole as the gallery erupted.

"You dream of these moments, to be in the final group on Sunday with everything on the line," Morikawa said during the trophy presentation, crediting his focus under pressure. "Viktor is an incredible champion, and I knew it would take a near-perfect round to catch him. That putt on 17, I just told myself to trust the line. To see it drop was an unbelievable feeling."

A Season of Consistency Rewarded

The victory is a fitting end to a stellar season for Morikawa, who recorded three wins and 12 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. Already a two-time major champion, this FedEx Cup title adds the Tour’s most lucrative prize to his already impressive resume and solidifies his position among the sport's top echelon.

For Hovland, the runner-up finish was a heartbreaking conclusion to a valiant title defense. The Norwegian star was gracious in defeat.

"I left it all out there, but Collin was just on another level today," Hovland told reporters. "He played incredible golf and didn't make any mistakes when it mattered most. Hats off to him, he earned it completely."

The final leaderboard saw World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finish in third place at 19-under, while Xander Schauffele, a past winner at East Lake, finished fourth. The conclusion of the Tour Championship officially marks the end of the 2024-25 PGA Tour season, with many of the top American and European players now shifting their focus to the upcoming Ryder Cup next month at Bethpage Black.
