‘American Idol’ Music Supervisor and Husband Found Dead in Apparent Double Homicide; Suspect Arrested
LOS ANGELES – Susan Zarrabi, a veteran music supervisor for the popular television competition 'American Idol,' and her husband, film producer Nick Cooper, were found shot dead in their Sherman Oaks home Tuesday in what police are calling a targeted double homicide.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed Wednesday that a suspect, identified as 45-year-old Matthew Ryder, has been arrested and is in custody. The tragic discovery has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, where Zarrabi was a respected and influential figure for over 15 years.
Police Announce Arrest in Sherman Oaks Slayings
According to LAPD officials, officers were dispatched to the couple's residence on the evening of Tuesday, July 15, to conduct a wellness check after Zarrabi failed to appear for a scheduled production meeting. Upon entering the home, they discovered the bodies of Zarrabi, 48, and Cooper, 52. Both victims had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
At a press conference held Wednesday morning, LAPD Captain Elena Ramirez of the Robbery-Homicide Division stated that the investigation progressed rapidly. "Evidence recovered at the scene led detectives to identify a person of interest," Ramirez said. "Mr. Ryder was apprehended without incident at his residence in Van Nuys in the early hours of this morning."
While a definitive motive is still under investigation, authorities believe the killings may have stemmed from a business dispute. Ryder is described as a former business associate of Cooper's, though the exact nature of their professional relationship has not been disclosed. "This appears to be a tragic and targeted act of violence, not a random crime," Captain Ramirez added. "We are confident that we have the sole individual responsible for this heinous act in custody."
A Celebrated Career in Music
Susan Zarrabi was a key creative force behind the scenes of 'American Idol' since joining the production in 2010. As a music supervisor, she was instrumental in guiding contestants through song selection, navigating complex music licensing, and shaping the overall sound of the show. Her work earned her two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Music Direction.
Colleagues remember her as a passionate mentor with an encyclopedic knowledge of music. She was credited with helping launch the careers of numerous contestants by finding the perfect songs to showcase their talent.
Her husband, Nick Cooper, was an independent film producer known for championing character-driven dramas and documentaries that often struggled to find backing from major studios. Together, they were seen as a dynamic and well-respected couple within Hollywood circles.
Industry in Shock as Tributes Pour In
The news of the couple's violent deaths has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and colleagues. Fremantle, the production company behind 'American Idol,' released a statement expressing profound sadness.
"We are devastated by the tragic loss of our dear colleague and friend, Susan Zarrabi," the statement read. "Susan was a brilliant and vital part of the 'American Idol' family for more than a decade. Her passion for music and her unwavering dedication to our contestants were infectious. We extend our deepest condolences to her family. She will be deeply missed."
Former 'American Idol' judge and music executive Randy Jackson wrote on social media, "Absolutely heartbroken. Susan was a true pro and a kind soul who loved music and the artists. A devastating loss for all of us who knew her."
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office prepare to file formal charges against Ryder.
